In order to stop the rapid deterioration of the ethnic situation on the Balkans, UN troops were sent to Bosnia-Herzegovina in 1992. To protect the troops two no-fly zones were established which were extended to cover all fixed or rotary wing aircraft later in 1993. Operation Deny Flight ( ODF) was started to enforce no-fly zones on 12th April, 1993. F-15E Strike Eagles operating from Aviano AB, Italy flew sorties to maintain these no-fly zones. These missions were basically defensive in nature. At the beginning, no bombing and no aerial combat took place, however NATO was forced to initiate a series of limited air strikes against Serbian military targets in 1993. These strikes lasted until 1995. F-15E sorties were flown mainly by jets from the 492nd FS "Madhatters" and from the 494th FS "Panthers", but jets from the (now non-existent) 90th FS "Pair-O-Dice" also took part in the missions for a few months in 1995. Loadout #1 - Close Air SupportDue to the pinpoint accuracy and relatively little collateral damage caused, GBU-12 is an ideal bomb for CAS purposes, especially when moving vehicles are required to hit. This loadout uses 4 GBU-12's, plus the usual A/A missile load. Drop tanks were standard during OAF to give the jets extended range and patrol time. Note that this loadout is identical to OAF Loadout #2.
