If I'm doing the 87-0173, do I have to cut out the circular exhaust vent on the right side of part G17 at Step 28?

I checked Jake Melampy's excellent book for details (see The Modern Eagle Guide, see page 64). This round exhaust you are talking about is a heat exchanger exhaust and is used for environmental control system cooling. It's a big hole with louvres, so I suggest to cut it out and create the louvres somehow. There are 5 vertical louvres in the hole with equal distance from each other.

the cost of the aftermarket parts to update the Mudhen to current standards can't be justified. So I exchanged that Mudhen for a Tamiya 1/32 F-16CJ and settled for a smaller 1/48 Revell Mudhen.
